Do you like bread ? Do you like milk ? Why not make some milk bread !

Milk bread is so tasty and fluffy it is definitely worth making.

It takes a total of 2 hours 20 mins to make and will make a loaf which will have 30 slices.

Milk bread was first developed in Japan, it is a lightweight, fluffy and soft white loaf of bread. It is perfect for breakfast, if you are wanting a slice of toast with plenty of butter. Maybe even add in a little bit of jam.

Ingredients

  • 300 g milk

  • 50 g unsalted butter

  • 2 tsp dried instant yeast

  • 20 - 60 g sugar

  • 550 g strong white bread flour

  • 1 ½ tsp salt

  • 1 medium egg

Steps

1. Place the milk, butter, yeast and sugar in a mixing bowl. Warm up in the microwave until melted.

2. Then lightly grease another large bowl.

3. Add flour and salt then knead the dough into a ball.

4. Place the dough ball into the greased bowl and cover with a damp tea towel then leave to rest in a warm place until doubled in size. This will be approx. 1 hour.

5. Once the dough has been rested divide it into 3 equal-sized pieces and shape each piece into a rope (approx. 45 cm long). Join the 3 ropes at one end, plait, and join again at the other end.

6. Place the plaited loaf on the baking tray, cover with a damp tea towel and leave to prove in a warm place until doubled in size. This will usually take 30 minutes.

7. While you are waiting for the load to double, preheat oven to 180°C.

8. Beat an egg then brush this on top of the loaf and bake for 25-30 minutes until bread sounds hollow when tapped underneath.

9. Leave to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

If you wanted to do something a little different to your loaf.

You could sprinkle with flaked almonds after brushing with egg. To make an interesting topping.

Even add fruit into the dough such as raisins. If you do this towards the end of kneading. One minute before the end of the kneading in step 2, add 80 g raisins.
